BMW has demonstrated the long-distance capabilities of its next-generation electric platform in China, recording a single-charge run of 1,030.2 kilometers. The test marks a significant performance benchmark for the Neue Klasse iX3 50L xDrive as the company seeks to strengthen its position in the competitive Chinese EV market.

In an internal extreme-range test, the iX3 50L traveled from BMW's production base in Shenyang to its R&D center in Beijing. The vehicle completed the journey without stopping to recharge, arriving at its destination with 5% of its battery capacity remaining. This real-world result surpasses the model's official China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) range of 919 kilometers.

Technical Foundations

The performance leap is driven by a shift in battery chemistry and electrical architecture. The iX3 50L utilizes high-nickel Series 9 cells, which offer an energy density approximately 20% higher than the prismatic cells used in previous generations. This increased density allows for more energy storage within the same physical footprint.

Complementing the battery chemistry is the adoption of an 800V architecture. This high-voltage system is designed to improve efficiency and reduce charging times, addressing two of the primary hurdles for EV adoption. By combining these hardware upgrades, BMW is positioning the Neue Klasse as a fundamental technological departure from its earlier eDrive systems.
