PDX Deploys Overhead EV Charging to Streamline Rental Fleet Electrification

Portland International Airport (PDX) has launched an overhead fast-charging system designed to accelerate the electrification of rental car fleets. The installation addresses the logistical hurdles of integrating high-power charging into the fast-paced environment of airport vehicle servicing.

Developed by ChargePoint, the system is located at the airport's Quick Turnaround Facility (QTA), the hub where rental vehicles are cleaned and prepared for the next customer. The setup consists of 10 dual-port fast chargers, allowing the airport to charge up to 20 electric vehicles simultaneously. To maintain a clear workspace, the system utilizes retractable cables that descend from the ceiling, removing the need for traditional floor-mounted pedestals that often obstruct traffic.

The Logistics of Airport Electrification

Airports face unique challenges when transitioning to electric rental fleets. High power requirements often clash with limited floor space, and the need for rapid vehicle turnaround means that any obstruction in the service lane can create significant operational bottlenecks. Traditional charging pedestals are not only space-consuming but are also highly susceptible to accidental damage from vehicles maneuvering in high-traffic service areas.

By moving the hardware overhead, PDX eliminates these physical barriers. The retractable design ensures that cables and equipment remain out of the path of both moving vehicles and facility staff, reducing the risk of workplace accidents and equipment failure.

Operational and Financial Impact

This shift in infrastructure provides a scalable model for other space-constrained airports looking to integrate high-power charging without sacrificing efficiency. Beyond the spatial benefits, the overhead configuration offers direct financial advantages during the build phase.

Jeremiah Hartley, the airport rental car manager at Portland International Airport, noted that the innovative system allowed the facility to save on installation costs by limiting the amount of conduit and wiring required. Hartley also highlighted that the design helps protect the expensive charging hardware from potential damage caused by vehicles operating within the QTA.

Industry Implications

As rental agencies face increasing pressure to transition to electric fleets, the cost and risk of infrastructure installation remain primary barriers. The PDX model demonstrates that protecting equipment from collisions and optimizing floor layout can lower the barrier to entry for fleet electrification.

Industry observers will be watching to see if this overhead template is adopted by other major hubs. While the current installation focuses on the QTA, the success of this deployment may lead to similar configurations in other airport service zones or commercial logistics centers where floor space is at a premium and vehicle traffic is constant.
