A Tesla owner has successfully retrofitted Hardware 4 (HW4) into an older Model 3, achieving a hardware leap that Tesla has not yet offered to its general fleet. The modification allows an older vehicle to utilize the latest sensing and processing capabilities currently reserved for newer models.
According to InsideEVs, the process required a comprehensive overhaul of the vehicle's autonomous suite. The owner replaced both the Full Self-Driving (FSD) computer and the entire camera array. This dual replacement was necessary because HW4 cameras are physically and electronically incompatible with the existing HW3 hardware, making a partial upgrade impossible.

Tesla's autonomous hardware has evolved through several iterations, moving from HW2.5 to HW3 and now to HW4, also referred to as AI4. For years, CEO Elon Musk maintained that HW3 would be sufficient to achieve full autonomy. However, more recent admissions from the company suggest that HW3 may struggle to reach the safety benchmarks required for unsupervised FSD.
