BYD Debuts Great Han Flagship EV With 1,000-km Range and Sub-$40k Pricing
The new D-segment luxury sedan challenges premium incumbents with ultra-fast charging and massive battery capacity.
BYD has opened pre-orders for the Great Han (Da Han), a new flagship electric sedan designed to anchor the company's luxury Dynasty family. Revealed at the Chengdu Motor Show, the vehicle combines high-end dimensions with a price point that significantly undercuts Western luxury competitors.
The sedan enters the market with a starting price of 249,900 yuan, approximately $34,500. In terms of performance, the RWD Premium and Flagship variants utilize a 102.326 kWh battery to achieve a CLTC driving range of up to 1,008 km (626 miles). For those prioritizing power, an AWD variant is available, delivering 570 kW (764 hp) and a CLTC range of 880 km (546 miles).
A Leap in Charging Infrastructure
Beyond raw range, the Great Han debuts the Blade Battery 2.0 and a proprietary "Flash Charging" system. Leveraging 1,500 kW technology, BYD claims the vehicle can charge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes, and reach 97% capacity in nine minutes. This charging speed represents a significant technical escalation in the effort to eliminate range anxiety for long-distance luxury travel.
Redefining Luxury Dimensions
Physical scale is a core component of the Great Han's flagship positioning. The sedan measures 5,256 mm in length, 1,999 mm in width, and 1,510 mm in height, supported by a 3,130 mm wheelbase. These dimensions make the Great Han larger than both the Tesla Model S and the Lucid Air, signaling BYD's intent to compete directly in the full-size luxury segment.
Market Implications
By pairing a 1,000-km range and massive interior volume with a starting price well under $40,000, BYD is aggressively challenging the dominance of established luxury brands and Tesla. The strategy leverages BYD's vertical integration to offer specifications that typically command six-figure prices in the U.S. and European markets, potentially forcing a price correction across the premium EV sector.

While the core specifications and pricing are now public, the full suite of software and driver-assistance features remains a point of interest. Lu Tian, General Manager of BYD’s Dynasty series, noted that "more surprises await" as the rollout continues.
