Federal investigators are examining a potential electronic brake module defect affecting over 3,000 GM electric vehicles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq following reports of critical brake failures. The probe focuses on whether a systemic hardware defect is compromising the safety of General Motors' luxury electric SUV.
According to the investigation, affected owners reported experiencing a hard brake pedal and receiving a "Brake System Failure" warning message on their dashboards. GM has attributed the malfunction to a potential fracture of an internal spindle within the eBoost electronic brake module, which occurs specifically when the anti-lock braking system (ABS) is triggered. The issue is currently limited to the 2023 model year, with approximately 3,322 vehicles identified as potentially affected.
The Ultium Transition
This investigation comes as General Motors aggressively scales its Ultium battery platform, the modular architecture underpinning its transition to an all-electric future. The Lyriq serves as a flagship for this strategy. While GM has aimed for rapid deployment of these platforms to compete with Tesla and other EV manufacturers, the reliance on complex electronic braking systems—which integrate regenerative braking with traditional friction brakes—introduces new points of failure that regulators are now scrutinizing.
Safety Implications for EVs
Brake failures in electric vehicles represent a heightened safety risk compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. EVs are significantly heavier due to the mass of their battery packs, which places substantially more stress on braking components during emergency stops or high-speed deceleration. A failure in the eBoost module, particularly one that results in a hard pedal, can significantly increase stopping distances and reduce a driver's ability to avoid collisions, making the NHTSA's intervention critical for consumer safety.

Regulators will continue to evaluate the frequency and severity of these failures to determine if a formal safety recall is necessary for all 3,322 affected Lyriqs. While the current probe is specific to the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq, the industry is watching to see if the eBoost module defect extends to other GM EV models utilizing similar electronic braking architecture. GM has not yet confirmed if other vehicles in the Ultium lineup will be included in the scope of the investigation.
