BYD Deploys 10,000 Ultra-Fast 1.5MW Chargers in Five-Month Blitz
Partnering with Sinopec, the Chinese EV giant is scaling a network capable of powering batteries to 70% in just five minutes.
BYD has installed 10,000 of its 1.5-megawatt (1,500kW) "flash charging" stations within five months of the technology's debut. This aggressive rollout aims to eliminate charging anxiety by bringing ultra-fast power to a massive urban and highway footprint across China.
The deployment currently spans 325 Chinese cities, with the company on track to reach a year-end target of 20,000 stations. This final tally will be split between 18,000 urban installations and 2,000 highway chargers. To accelerate this pace, BYD has entered a strategic partnership with Sinopec, China's state-owned oil company, to co-locate these high-power chargers at existing fuel stations.
The Race for Ultra-Fast Power
This infrastructure is designed specifically to complement BYD's Blade 2.0 battery technology. When paired with the 1.5MW system, the Blade 2.0 can charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes and reach 97% capacity in just nine minutes.
This push places BYD at the forefront of a broader Chinese trend toward charging times measured in minutes rather than hours. While Western competitors pursue faster speeds—with Mercedes targeting 11-minute charges and Tesla deploying 500kW V4 Superchargers—Chinese firms like CATL and Geely are pushing boundaries toward three- and four-minute cycles. BYD's 1.5MW system represents a significant leap in power output compared to current infrastructure available in the United States.
Market Implications
By vertically integrating high-performance batteries with a matching high-power grid, BYD is creating a closed-loop ecosystem that removes a primary barrier to electric vehicle adoption. The ability to replenish a battery in the time it takes to buy a coffee fundamentally changes the user experience and potentially widens the competitive gap between Chinese EVs and their Western counterparts.
This strategy transforms the charging process from a planned event into a seamless part of a commute, potentially making the EV experience indistinguishable from the convenience of internal combustion engine refueling.
Global Ambitions
BYD is not limiting this infrastructure to its home market. The company has announced international expansion plans that include the installation of 3,000 chargers in Europe and an additional 3,000 chargers across other overseas markets.
As BYD exports both its vehicles and its charging hardware, the industry will be watching to see if these 1.5MW systems can be integrated into foreign power grids, which often face different regulatory and technical constraints than those found in China.
