BYD has completed an extreme stress test on its luxury Yangwang U7 to determine if ultra-fast charging causes significant battery degradation. The results aim to validate the durability of the vehicle's megawatt charging capabilities under intense, repeated use.
According to reports from InsideEVs and other industry outlets, BYD subjected the Yangwang U7 to more than 350 ultra-fast charging cycles within a window of roughly nine days—specifically 8 days, 19 hours, and 58 minutes. The vehicle is capable of charging from 10% to 97% in approximately nine minutes. This charging blitz was part of a broader 30,000 km endurance test designed to evaluate battery health under the most grueling charging and driving conditions possible.
The Challenge of Ultra-Fast Charging
Ultra-fast charging typically generates significant heat and chemical stress within battery cells. In most electric vehicle architectures, this thermal load can lead to accelerated degradation, reducing the total usable capacity of the battery over time. As luxury EV manufacturers race to eliminate "range anxiety," the industry has faced a persistent technical trade-off: increasing charging speeds often comes at the cost of the battery's overall lifespan.
