BYD Launches 1,140-hp Denza Z9 GT e3 Premium Trim

The new variant bridges the pricing gap in the luxury GT lineup by pairing flagship tri-motor performance with streamlined luxury features.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · September 9, 2026

BYD’s premium brand, Denza, launched the e3 Premium trim for its Z9 GT electric luxury GT on September 9, 2026. The move introduces a more accessible entry point for the brand's high-performance tri-motor powertrain, targeting buyers who prioritize raw power over high-end luxury amenities.

The new e3 Premium variant starts at 329,800 yuan (approximately $49,100). Despite the lower price point, the vehicle retains the flagship tri-motor AWD layout, which produces 850 kW (1,140 hp) and 1,210 N·m of torque. To achieve these cost reductions, Denza implemented a "lightweight configuration" strategy, most notably replacing the top-tier carbon-ceramic brake discs with ventilated cast-iron discs.

Technical Foundation

The Z9 GT is built on BYD’s Xuanji architecture and utilizes e3 technology, a scaled-down version of the company's ultra-luxury e4 system. This setup enables tri-motor independent drive and incorporates rear-wheel steering with an angle of ±10 degrees, enhancing agility in the large luxury shooting brake. According to Denza General Manager Li Hui, the new trim addresses customer demand for tri-motor handling and more flexible configuration choices.

Market Implications

By introducing the e3 Premium, BYD is aggressively positioning itself against luxury EV rivals such as the Zeekr 001. The strategy leverages BYD's vertical integration to offer a significant horsepower advantage—1,140 hp compared to the Zeekr's 778 hp—at a competitive or lower price point. This allows the company to maintain a performance edge while stripping away non-essential luxury costs to attract a broader segment of the premium market.

Sales Outlook

The pricing adjustment comes as Denza navigates a volatile domestic market. Retail sales for the Z9 GT in China eased by 11.3% month-on-month in July, with deliveries dropping to 5,344 units. Analysts will be watching to see if the more affordable tri-motor option can reverse this trend and stimulate demand among performance-oriented buyers who were previously priced out of the e3 Performance trim.
