Kia Expands PV5 Electric Van Lineup to 10 Modular Body Styles

Kia has expanded its PV5 electric van lineup to 10 distinct body styles, signaling a major push into highly customizable commercial and passenger mobility. The expansion was detailed during the Kia PBV Production Hub Tech Day on September 8, 2026.
The new configurations include the upscale PV5 Prime, a Passenger 5-seater (1-2-2), a Passenger 7-seater (2-2-3), and a Cargo Compact version. These options are made possible by the PV5's E-GMP.S. modular skateboard platform, which allows the vehicle's chassis to be decoupled from its body. For the Passenger model, Kia has specified dimensions of 4,695 mm in length, 1,895 mm in width, and 1,915 mm in height, supported by a 2,995 mm wheelbase.
The PBV Strategy
The PV5 serves as the debut model for Kia's "Platform Beyond Vehicle" (PBV) business. This strategic shift moves away from traditional vehicle design toward a modular approach where different "top hats"—or body styles—can be swapped onto a common chassis to meet specific user needs. This flexibility allows Kia to target diverse segments, from specialized logistics to luxury transport, using a single underlying architecture.
To support this ambitious rollout, Kia is utilizing the Hwaseong EVO Plant in South Korea. The site, which combines East and West plants, is designed for high-volume output with a total annual production capacity ranging between 200,000 and 250,000 units.
Market Impact and Implications
This move toward software-defined, modular architectures could disrupt the traditional van market by offering rapid customization that was previously reserved for bespoke coachbuilders. By providing 10 different configurations for one model, Kia is attempting to capture a wider array of commercial and consumer niches simultaneously.
Early market adoption suggests strong demand for the platform. According to company data, Kia sold more than 39,000 PV5 units globally during the first eight months of 2026, indicating a healthy appetite for purpose-built electric utility vehicles.
Future Roadmap
The PV5 is only the first step in a broader series of modular vehicles. Kia plans to expand the PBV family with the introduction of the larger PV7, which is scheduled to debut on September 14, 2026. Looking further ahead, the company expects to launch the even larger PV9 around 2030, completing a tiered ecosystem of modular electric vans designed for varying scales of operation.
