BYD's 2026 Seagull Refresh Adds LiDAR and Power Boost

The budget EV grows in size and power to fend off rising competition in the mass-market segment.

BYD is preparing a comprehensive refresh of the Seagull, its most affordable electric vehicle, to maintain its grip on the mass-market segment. The upcoming 2026 model, known internationally as the Dolphin Mini or Dolphin Surf, introduces substantial upgrades to its powertrain, dimensions, and onboard technology.

Leaked spy shots and MIIT filings reveal that the refreshed Seagull has grown significantly. The vehicle now measures 4,205 mm in length, 1,810 mm in width, and 1,570 mm in height, featuring a wheelbase of 2,650 mm. This is a notable jump from the previous model's 3,780 mm length. Performance is also seeing a major lift; the electric motor has been upgraded to 95 kW (127 hp), a sharp increase over the 55 kW (75 hp) found in the previous top trim.

Inside, the cabin has been modernized with a single center-mounted infotainment display that replaces the traditional driver's dashboard display. Most notably, the new model adds roof-mounted LiDAR to support advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), according to reports from Electrek and CarNewsChina.

The Battle for the Budget Segment

The Seagull serves as the entry-level offering for BYD's Ocean Network and has become one of the world's best-selling EVs, with a starting price of approximately $10,000 (69,900 yuan) in China. Its success has made it a primary target for other manufacturers looking to capture the low-cost transition to electric mobility. Recently, the model has faced intensifying pressure in its home market from emerging rivals, including the Geely EX2 and the Leapmotor B03X.

Strategic Implications

By integrating premium hardware like LiDAR into its cheapest model, BYD is shifting the baseline for what consumers expect from a budget EV. This strategy allows the company to defend its market share against domestic competitors while simultaneously increasing the vehicle's appeal in international markets where ADAS features are increasingly demanded. Zhang Zhuo, the sales boss of BYD’s Ocean series, signaled the shift in direction, stating that as the vehicle's silhouette emerges, "the promise of growing up is about to be fulfilled."

What to Watch

While the technical specifications and core interior changes are confirmed via regulatory filings, the final pricing for the 2026 refresh remains unconfirmed. Industry analysts will be watching to see if BYD can maintain its aggressive $10,000 price point despite the addition of a more powerful motor and expensive LiDAR sensors. Further details regarding the specific capabilities of the new ADAS suite and the official global launch timeline are expected in the coming months.
