BYD Unveils ETT 44 Electric Semi With 1.5 MW Megawatt Charging
The heavy-duty tractor targets European logistics with a 372-mile range and rapid-charging tech to challenge the Tesla Semi.
BYD has unveiled the ETT 44, a heavy-duty electric tractor designed to accelerate the transition of long-haul logistics from diesel to electric. Debuting at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, the vehicle serves as a direct challenge to the Tesla Semi and established European truck manufacturers.
The ETT 44 is powered by a 651 kWh Blade Battery, a proprietary BYD technology providing a claimed maximum range of 372 miles (approximately 600 km). To minimize operational downtime, the truck supports 1.5 MW "Flash Charging." According to company specifications, this megawatt charging system can replenish the battery from 20% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes, adding up to 248 miles of range in a single session. Performance figures indicate a rated power output of 743 PS, with a peak capacity of 1,000 PS.
Strategic European Expansion
BYD is aggressively expanding its commercial vehicle footprint in Europe, attempting to replicate the success it has seen in the passenger EV market. The ETT 44 enters a competitive landscape where the Tesla Semi has established a high benchmark for range but continues to face hurdles regarding European deployment and infrastructure. BYD is leveraging its vertical integration—specifically its control over battery production and high-power charging hardware—to bypass these bottlenecks and offer a more readily deployable solution for European fleets.
Safety and Industry Impact
Beyond power and range, BYD is prioritizing safety certifications to gain trust in the European market. In its first Euro NCAP assessment, the ETT 44 received a five-star rating, scoring 89% in Safe Driving and 73% in Crash Avoidance. This focus on safety, combined with megawatt charging, addresses the primary barriers to electric long-haul trucking: safety concerns and charging downtime. If BYD can successfully deploy the 1.5 MW charging network alongside the vehicle, it could shift the industry standard for heavy logistics more effectively than competitors relying on slower charging protocols.
The Road Ahead
Industry observers are now watching for the rollout of the supporting charging infrastructure, as the ETT 44's utility depends entirely on the availability of 1.5 MW stations. While the technical specifications are confirmed, the scale of the initial European fleet deployment and the actual real-world efficiency of the Blade Battery under full heavy-duty loads remain the key metrics for the truck's long-term viability.
