China Recalls 7 Million EVs Over Hidden Emergency Door Handles
Regulators target 'minimalist' designs that blend emergency releases into interior trim, hindering escapes during power failures.
China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has coordinated one of the largest automotive recalls in history, affecting more than 7 million vehicles. The action targets interior emergency mechanical door releases that are nearly impossible for occupants to find during critical failures.
According to SAMR, the emergency handles in the affected cabins are difficult to identify because their color blends in with the interior trim. This design flaw creates a significant safety risk during severe crashes where low-voltage system failures may disable electronic door controls, potentially trapping occupants inside the vehicle. Tesla is the most heavily impacted manufacturer, recalling 2,975,910 vehicles across its Model 3, Y, S, and X lineups. Other affected brands include Xiaomi with 390,435 units, Leapmotor with 371,200 units, Xpeng with 264,842 units, and Zeekr with 92,658 units. The recall also extends to major domestic players including Geely, Chery, Dongfeng, BAIC, and FAW.
New Safety Standards
The massive recall follows the introduction of the 'Technical Requirements for Automobile Door Handle Safety' (GB 48001 — 2026). This mandatory national standard, which takes effect for new models on January 1, 2027, effectively ends the era of purely electronic hidden door handles in the Chinese market. The regulation mandates that every door must be equipped with a mechanical release. Furthermore, these internal handles must be clearly visible and positioned within 300 mm of the door edges to ensure they can be located instinctively during an emergency.
The Cost of Minimalism
This regulatory crackdown signals a pivot away from 'minimalist' EV design trends that have prioritized sleek aesthetics over intuitive safety. For years, automakers have moved toward flush handles and hidden interior releases to achieve a futuristic look, but regulators are now prioritizing the critical necessity of high-visibility backups. This tension is not unique to China; similar concerns have emerged in the United States through NHTSA probes and the proposed 'SAFE Exit Act,' both of which examine the dangers of electronic door systems that fail during power loss.
Remediation and Outlook
To address the current fleet, automakers are implementing a mix of physical and digital fixes. Primary remedies include the addition of high-visibility warning labels to the existing mechanical handles. Some brands are also deploying over-the-air (OTA) software updates designed to automatically lower windows following a detected accident to provide alternative exit paths. While these patches address existing vehicles, the industry must now redesign interiors to meet the strict visibility and placement requirements of the GB 48001 standard before the 2027 deadline.
