Tesla and 10 Automakers Recall 7 Million Vehicles in China Over Door Safety
A massive coordinated recall targets hidden emergency door releases that are too difficult to find during crashes.
Tesla and a coalition of other automakers are recalling millions of vehicles in China after regulators determined that interior emergency door releases are too difficult to identify and operate during accidents. The coordinated effort covers more than 7 million cars total, marking one of the largest safety-driven recalls in the history of the Chinese market.
Tesla is the most heavily impacted manufacturer, recalling 2,975,910 vehicles. This figure includes both imported and domestically produced Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles. The broader action involves 11 carmakers in total, including Xiaomi, Xpeng, Geely, Leapmotor, Chery, Dongfeng, BAIC, and FAW. According to the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), the emergency releases are difficult to operate because they closely match the color of the surrounding interior trim, creating a significant risk of entrapment if electrical systems fail during a collision.
The Shift Away from Aesthetics
The crisis stems from a broader industry trend toward electronic door latches and flush exterior handles, a design philosophy popularized by Tesla to improve aerodynamics and aesthetics. While these systems function normally under standard conditions, they rely on electrical power. In the event of a severe crash where the vehicle's power is severed, passengers must rely on mechanical overrides. However, the integration of these overrides into the interior design has often prioritized a "sleek" look over visibility, leaving occupants unable to locate the manual release in high-stress, low-visibility emergency scenarios.
Industry and Regulatory Fallout
This recall signals a decisive regulatory pivot in China, prioritizing fail-safe mechanical accessibility over modern design trends. The move is not merely a one-time correction but a systemic change in how vehicles will be built. In February 2026, China released a new mandatory national standard, GB 48001—2026. This regulation will effectively ban the use of purely electronic hidden door handles for all new vehicle models starting January 1, 2027.
This tension between EV design and safety is not limited to China. In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened rulemaking on similar issues, and lawmakers have proposed the "SAFE Exit Act" to ensure that manual door releases are intuitive and accessible to all passengers.
The Path to Resolution
To address the current safety gap, Tesla is implementing a two-pronged remedy. The company will install physical warning labels to help passengers locate the mechanical releases and will push an over-the-air (OTA) software update. This update is designed to implement a post-crash window-lowering strategy, providing an alternative escape route if the doors remain jammed.
Industry analysts are now watching to see if other global markets will follow China's lead in banning purely electronic handles. For now, the focus remains on the millions of existing vehicles that must be updated to ensure that a design choice does not become a fatal flaw during an emergency.
