Einride and DAF Partner to Scale Level 4 Autonomous Electric Freight

The collaboration integrates Einride's autonomous driving software into DAF's premium electric truck platforms to accelerate commercial deployment.

Swedish autonomous freight company Einride and Dutch manufacturer DAF have partnered to integrate Level 4 autonomous driving technology into electric heavy-duty trucks. The move aims to transition autonomous freight from isolated pilots to standardized, mass-produced vehicle platforms.

Under the agreement, Einride will integrate its "Einride Driver" Level 4 autonomous system into DAF's premium electric truck offerings. The partnership focuses on DAF's "X" brand, specifically the XG and XG+ Electric models designed for long-haul applications. The integration will be based on the platform whose XD and XF Electric models were jointly named International Truck of the Year 2026.

Timeline for the rollout is set in two phases: initial interface testing and validation are scheduled for 2026, followed by the full integration and commissioning of the autonomous driving software in 2027. To ensure technical precision, the companies are collaborating with TNO, a Dutch research institute, to define and test the integration process.

The Path to Scale

This partnership represents a strategic convergence of software agility and industrial scale. While Einride has already deployed Level 4 trucks on public roads at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges and on private roads in Ohio, scaling such technology requires the manufacturing infrastructure of an established OEM. DAF, a subsidiary of PACCAR—which also owns Kenworth and Peterbilt—provides the necessary production capacity to move beyond niche applications.

"By leveraging DAF’s decades of manufacturing excellence and market strength, we can expedite the global scale-up of Einride’s autonomous technology," said Henrik Green, CTO at Einride.

Industry Implications

The freight sector is currently grappling with chronic driver shortages and volatile fuel costs, creating a market imperative for electric and autonomous solutions. By combining a vehicle-agnostic software stack with a premium hardware platform, the partnership reduces the barrier to entry for logistics firms looking to automate their fleets.

Jeroen van den Oetelaar, DAF Trucks’ Chief Engineer, noted that combining the premium truck platform with leading autonomous technology is a step toward shaping a "more efficient, safer, and sustainable freight ecosystem."

What to Watch

As the project moves toward the 2026 testing phase, the industry will be watching how the integration handles the complexities of long-haul logistics. While the technical roadmap is clear, the ultimate success of the venture will depend on the validation results from TNO and the subsequent software commissioning in 2027. If successful, this model could serve as a blueprint for other OEMs to integrate third-party autonomous stacks into electric chassis.
