Geely Targets 621-Mile EV Range With Solid-State Battery Rollout by 2027
The automotive giant plans to pilot high-density battery technology across Volvo, Polestar, and Zeekr brands.
Geely is developing high-energy-density solid-state batteries designed to push electric vehicle range beyond 621 miles. The company intends to integrate this technology across its brand portfolio, including Volvo, Polestar, and Zeekr, starting with prototypes in 2026.
According to company roadmaps, Geely is targeting an energy density of 500 Wh/kg for its solid-state cells. This leap in density is expected to provide a driving range exceeding 1,000 kilometers (621 miles), a figure that brings EV endurance in line with traditional long-distance diesel vehicles. To achieve this, Geely is pursuing three distinct technological paths: polymer (organic), sulfide, and halide (inorganic) composite solutions.
Shen Yuan, Senior Vice President and CTO of Geely Holdings, stated that the company's short-term objective is to complete prototype vehicle launches by 2026. Following the prototype phase, Geely aims to reach small-scale industrialization by 2027, with a goal of having 1,000 demonstration vehicles in active operation.
The Race for the 'Holy Grail'
Solid-state batteries are widely regarded as the 'holy grail' of EV development because they replace the volatile liquid electrolytes found in standard lithium-ion batteries with solid materials. This transition potentially offers significant improvements in safety, faster charging speeds, and vastly higher energy density. Geely's push comes amid an intensifying global arms race to commercialize the technology, with the company competing against other Chinese industry leaders like CATL and BYD, as well as international manufacturers such as Toyota.

Achieving a consistent 600-plus mile range would fundamentally alter the consumer landscape by effectively eliminating 'range anxiety.' For the majority of drivers, such capacity makes electric vehicles competitive with internal combustion engines for long-haul travel, removing one of the primary barriers to mass adoption.
