Hyundai Turns EVs Into Mobile Power Plants in Jeju V2G Pilot

A new project on Jeju Island allows IONIQ 9 and EV9 owners to stabilize the grid by selling surplus battery power.

Hyundai Motor Group has launched a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) pilot project on Jeju Island, South Korea, transforming electric vehicles into mobile power plants. The initiative integrates EVs into the broader energy ecosystem by allowing owners to sell surplus battery power back to the grid during peak demand.

The project utilizes the IONIQ 9 and Kia EV9 models, treating these vehicles as large-scale Energy Storage Systems (ESS). By absorbing surplus energy generated from volatile renewable sources—such as wind and solar—and returning it to the grid when needed, the vehicles help stabilize the local power supply. Participation is restricted to owners with private parking and dedicated chargers, yet the pilot has already seen high demand, resulting in a waiting list of applicants despite these strict eligibility requirements.

The Shift Toward Bidirectional Energy

V2G technology is part of a global effort to move beyond simple charging toward a bidirectional energy flow. While Nissan previously pioneered bidirectional charging with the Leaf, and Tesla has historically remained cautious due to concerns over battery degradation, Hyundai is leveraging its E-GMP platform to push toward commercialization. This platform previously popularized Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capabilities, which allow cars to power external appliances, providing the technical foundation for the more complex grid-integration required for V2G.

Redefining the EV Asset

This shift could fundamentally change the economic perception of electric vehicle ownership. Rather than viewing an EV solely as a cost center defined by purchase price, maintenance, and charging fees, V2G positions the vehicle as a revenue-generating energy asset. For regions like Jeju, which has high penetration of wind and solar power, this provides a vital solution for managing the intermittency of renewable energy, ensuring that green power is not wasted during periods of low demand.

The Path to Commercialization

While the Jeju pilot demonstrates technical viability and consumer interest, full-scale commercialization will depend on broader regulatory changes and the development of standardized energy trading frameworks. Observers will be watching whether the high demand from IONIQ 9 and EV9 owners translates into a scalable business model that can be exported to other regions. For now, the project serves as a primary test case for whether the automotive industry can successfully bridge the gap between transportation and utility-scale energy management.
