Tesla targets 2027 for Optimus sales as FSD v15 promises 'step-change' in autonomy

Tesla is positioning its next software iteration as a pivotal leap toward full autonomy while setting a concrete window for the commercial release of its humanoid robots. During a recent visit to the Fremont factory with JPMorgan analysts, the company provided updated guidance on the deployment of Full Self-Driving (FSD) v15 and the production scale of the Optimus robot.
According to a note from JPMorgan analyst Rajat Gupta, Tesla describes FSD v15 as a "step-change" in capability. The update is built upon seven core technologies, roughly 40% of which are already active within Tesla's robotaxi fleet in Austin. To support these ambitions, Tesla asserts that its current HW4 (AI4) hardware is sufficient for unsupervised driving. However, the company is simultaneously rolling out AI4.5, which offers double the memory and approximately 10% more compute power.
The Path to Unsupervised Driving
These technical updates are critical as Tesla attempts to scale its robotaxi operations. The company's unsupervised fleet has currently logged over 380,000 miles across six cities in two states. For the Cybercab, Tesla is targeting a long-run operational cost between $0.20 and $0.30 per mile. However, meaningful expansion of this fleet is tied directly to the completion of FSD v15, effectively pushing significant growth into late 2026 or early 2027.
This timeline follows a history of missed deadlines for unsupervised autonomy. Investors have previously seen similar hardware capability claims regarding HW3, which ultimately only received a "Lite" version of FSD v14, raising questions about the actual ceiling of existing hardware.
Robotics and Production Scale
Beyond autonomy, Tesla has finalized the design for the Optimus Gen 3 robot. The company is targeting external commercial sales as early as the second half of 2027. Production is slated to take place at the old Model S/X facility in Fremont, signaling a repurposing of legacy automotive infrastructure for robotics.
Tesla's long-term ambitions for Optimus are massive in scale. The company is eyeing a production capacity of approximately 1 million units at the Fremont site, with an additional 10 million units planned for its Texas facilities.
