Hyundai Motor Group Launches V2G Pilot on Jeju Island
A new project transforms Ioniq 9 and EV9 electric vehicles into mobile energy storage systems to stabilize the power grid.
Hyundai Motor Group has launched a retail Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) pilot project on Jeju Island, turning electric vehicles into active components of the energy grid. The initiative aims to evolve the role of the EV from a transportation tool into a mobile energy storage system.
The pilot involves 40 owners of the Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia EV9. Under the program, these vehicles function as energy storage systems by charging their batteries during off-peak hours and discharging power back into the grid during periods of peak demand. According to the project details, this bidirectional flow of energy helps stabilize the power grid by absorbing surplus energy generated from volatile renewable sources, such as wind and solar power.
The Shift to Energy Integration
V2G is part of a global effort to integrate electric vehicles into the broader energy ecosystem. While some manufacturers have historically remained cautious about V2G due to concerns over battery degradation, Hyundai is leveraging its E-GMP platform and previous success with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology. By doing so, the company is positioning itself as a first mover in the commercialization of V2G technology, moving beyond simple charging to active energy trading.
Implications for the Energy Market
This shift transforms the electric vehicle into a revenue-generating energy asset. If the technology is successfully scaled, it could significantly reduce the industry's reliance on expensive, stationary energy storage systems (ESS) and optimize national energy efficiency. By utilizing the existing battery capacity of thousands of parked vehicles, utilities can manage load spikes more effectively without building additional infrastructure.
The Path to Scaling
Despite the technical viability of the Jeju pilot, widespread adoption depends on the removal of several regulatory barriers. Key hurdles include the establishment of legal frameworks for private power trading and the creation of dedicated V2G tariffs to ensure fair compensation for vehicle owners. While the current pilot demonstrates the technical capability of the Ioniq 9 and EV9 to support the grid, the industry is still waiting for standardized compensation models to be established before a full-scale commercial rollout is possible.
