DAF Trucks and Einride Partner for Level 4 Autonomous Electric Freight

DAF Trucks and Swedish technology firm Einride have launched a joint initiative to integrate the "Einride Driver" autonomous system into DAF's premium electric vehicle platform. The partnership aims to bring SAE Level 4 autonomous electric freight to the commercial market to mitigate rising operational costs and chronic driver shortages.

Under the agreement, the companies will focus on integrating Einride's vehicle-agnostic autonomy stack into DAF's electric truck platform, specifically the XD and XF Electric models designated as the International Truck of the Year 2026. The goal is to achieve SAE Level 4 autonomy, a standard where vehicles perform repetitive transport tasks independently without human intervention under predefined conditions. To ensure the technology meets strict regulatory requirements for public road expansion, the partners are collaborating with TNO, a Dutch independent research institute for applied science and innovation, to define technical interfaces and manage type approval compliance.

The Path to Deployment

The rollout follows a multi-year timeline. Initial tests and the validation of key technical interfaces are scheduled for 2026. Following this phase, the partners expect to move into software integration and full commissioning in 2027.

This collaboration marks a strategic shift toward software-defined autonomy for heavy-duty transport. DAF, a subsidiary of PACCAR, is leveraging its manufacturing scale to accelerate the deployment of Einride's technology. "By leveraging DAF's decades of manufacturing excellence and market strength, we can expedite the global scale-up of Einride's autonomous technology," said Henrik Green, Chief Technology Officer at Einride.

Industry Implications

The partnership represents a significant move toward the large-scale commercialization of driverless trucking by decoupling vehicle hardware from autonomy software. By combining DAF's hardware with Einride's specialized stack, the initiative seeks to resolve critical logistics bottlenecks and reduce the carbon footprint of long-haul freight. Jeroen van den Oetelaar, DAF Trucks' Chief Engineer and board member, stated that combining the premium truck platform with autonomous technology is a step toward a "more efficient, safer, and sustainable freight ecosystem."

What to Watch

As the project progresses toward its 2026 testing window, the industry will be watching how the partnership navigates the regulatory hurdles associated with Level 4 autonomy on public roads. While PACCAR has previously pursued autonomous activities through its AVP program in North America, this European venture focuses specifically on the intersection of electrification and high-level autonomy. The success of the 2027 commissioning phase will determine if the model can be scaled across broader European freight corridors.
