Hyundai debuts IONIQ 9 Calligraphy Black Ink flagship for Europe
The new top-tier trim adds a curated 'stealth' aesthetic to Hyundai's largest electric SUV.
Hyundai has introduced the Calligraphy Black Ink as the new flagship trim for the IONIQ 9 electric three-row SUV across the UK and Europe. Positioned above the existing high-end Calligraphy specification, the edition offers a curated black exterior and interior design package for the brand's largest electric vehicle.
Available in both six- and seven-seat configurations, the Black Ink trim focuses on exclusive visual upgrades. Exterior enhancements include a matte black front Hyundai emblem, a gloss black rear garnish, and exclusive 21-inch Calligraphy Black Ink alloy wheels. Inside, the cabin features black Nappa leather seats, a black leather-wrapped steering wheel, and real aluminium dashboard trim finished in black. To maintain a strict aesthetic, the trim is limited to two exterior paint options: Serenity White Pearl and Abyss Black Pearl.
A New Luxury Benchmark
The IONIQ 9 is built on Hyundai's E-GMP architecture and has already established a critical foothold in the premium segment. The vehicle was named German Premium Car of the Year 2026 and earned the title of Best Seven-Seater at the 2026 Parkers New Car Awards. This new edition follows a broader design trend at Hyundai, mirroring 'stealth' or 'night' packages previously seen on models such as the Palisade.
Under the hood, the model utilizes a dual-motor setup producing 421bhp. This powertrain allows the SUV to accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds, while maintaining a maximum range of 372 miles. According to the Vice President and Head of Product and Product Director Office for Europe at Hyundai Motor Europe, the Black Ink edition enhances the vehicle's visual character through integrated design details to create a more distinctive interpretation of the flagship SUV.
Market Implications
By launching a dedicated Black Ink flagship, Hyundai is pushing the IONIQ 9 deeper into luxury SUV territory. This move places the vehicle in more direct competition with premium offerings like the Audi Q7 and its own platform-mate, the Kia EV9. The pricing strategy suggests a targeted effort to attract high-margin buyers who value exclusive aesthetic packages over mechanical or powertrain upgrades.
Pricing and Availability
In the UK, the Calligraphy Black Ink starts at £79,320. For the seven-seat guise, this represents a premium of £2,350 over the standard Calligraphy trim. The vehicle is currently being rolled out across European markets according to regional schedules. Future observers will be watching to see if this aesthetic-led flagship strategy expands to other models in the IONIQ electric lineup.
