DC Fast Charging Satisfaction Surges as Ionna Leads J.D. Power Study
Public charging failure rates hit an all-time low as OEM-backed networks challenge the reliability status quo.
U.S. electric vehicle drivers are finding public charging significantly more reliable, according to the 2026 J.D. Power U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Public Charging Study. The findings suggest a pivotal shift in infrastructure quality that could lower the barrier for prospective EV adopters.
DC fast charging satisfaction rose 12 points to a score of 666, driven largely by the emergence of high-performing networks. Ionna, a new network backed by a consortium of eight automotive companies, ranked first among DC fast charger networks. This improvement in the user experience is mirrored by hardware reliability; public charging failure rates dropped to an all-time low of 12%, down from 14% the previous year.
Conversely, the study highlighted a growing gap between fast and slow charging. Level 2 charging satisfaction declined by 12 points to a score of 595. J.D. Power attributes this drop to stagnation in payment ease and overall quality. Furthermore, the rapid improvements in the DC fast charging sector have effectively raised user expectations, making the shortcomings of Level 2 infrastructure more apparent to drivers.
Breaking the Reliability Monopoly
The rise of OEM-backed networks like Ionna represents a strategic shift in the U.S. market. By pooling resources to build high-performance stations—with a goal of 30,000 stations by 2030—automakers are systematically dismantling the Tesla Supercharger monopoly on reliability. Brent Gruber, Executive Director of EV Solutions at J.D. Power, noted that these new networks are building customer confidence through superior equipment, better locations, and smoother sessions, ensuring drivers can charge and return to the road quickly.
Market Implications
This infrastructure progress arrives during a volatile period for the U.S. EV market, characterized by mixed signals as some brands curtail expansion or exit the market entirely, such as Polestar. However, the reduction in "charging anxiety" remains a critical tailwind. As failure rates hit record lows and satisfaction climbs, the primary psychological hurdle for many consumers is being addressed through concrete engineering and investment rather than just policy.
