Eight Automakers Launch Ionna to Scale North American EV Charging

A consortium of eight global automakers is aggressively expanding the Ionna charging network across North America to eliminate the infrastructure gaps hindering electric vehicle adoption. The venture aims to provide a high-powered, reliable alternative to the Tesla Supercharger ecosystem by pooling the resources of the world's largest legacy manufacturers.

Founded by BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota, Ionna is focused on deploying a standardized charging experience. As part of its immediate rollout, the company has partnered with convenience store chain Sheetz to open 50 "Rechargeries" by the end of 2026. These hubs are designed to offer high-speed charging in a retail-integrated environment, reducing the friction typically associated with long-distance EV travel.

Addressing Charging Anxiety

The initiative was born from a need to address "charging anxiety," a primary psychological barrier for consumers transitioning from internal combustion engines to electric motors. By coordinating their efforts, these eight competitors are attempting to replicate the success of Europe's IONITY network, which similarly utilized a manufacturer-led approach to standardize charging across borders. While the network is open to all EV drivers, owners of vehicles from the partner brands are eligible for loyalty discounts, creating a value-add for the consortium's customers.

Breaking the Tesla Monopoly

This coordinated expansion represents a strategic move by legacy automakers to break Tesla's long-standing dominance over North American charging infrastructure. For years, the Supercharger network has served as a competitive advantage for Tesla, leaving other manufacturers to rely on fragmented third-party networks with varying levels of reliability. By establishing a manufacturer-backed ecosystem, Ionna seeks to ensure that the transition to electric mobility is not dependent on a single competitor's proprietary network.

Long-Term Infrastructure Goals

Looking ahead, Ionna has set an ambitious long-term target of installing 30,000 charging stations and ports by 2030. The success of this rollout will depend on the consortium's ability to maintain rapid deployment schedules and secure strategic real estate for its Rechargeries. Industry observers are now watching to see if this collective effort can scale fast enough to keep pace with the increasing volume of EVs hitting the road across the United States and Canada.
