EPA confirms 321-mile range for 2027 Kia EV3 as US launch nears

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has released official driving range estimates for the 2027 Kia EV3, signaling the imminent arrival of the compact electric SUV in the North American market. These figures position the entry-level vehicle as a high-efficiency competitor in the affordable EV segment.

According to data reported by Electrek, the long-range front-wheel-drive (FWD) model, equipped with an 81.4 kWh battery, achieves an EPA-estimated range of 321 miles. For buyers prioritizing a lower price point, the standard-range EV3 Light FWD features a 58.3 kWh battery and an estimated range of 221 miles. Kia is also offering an all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant with the larger 81.4 kWh battery, which provides up to 280 miles of range on a single charge.

A Strategic Market Entry

The EV3 is built on Kia's E-GMP platform, designed to scale the advanced technology found in the flagship EV9 into a more compact and accessible package. While the model is a new addition to the U.S. lineup, it has already established a market presence with successful rollouts across South Korea, the United Kingdom, and various European markets. To ensure a seamless transition for American drivers, all North American EV3 models will feature a built-in North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, granting native access to the Tesla Supercharger network without the need for adapters.

Industry Implications

This launch targets a critical gap in the U.S. electric vehicle market: the affordable, long-range compact SUV. By offering a variant that exceeds 300 miles of range, Kia is positioning the EV3 as a more capable alternative to established budget EVs like the Nissan LEAF and the Chevrolet Bolt EV. The combination of competitive range and native NACS integration is specifically designed to attract budget-conscious consumers and those moving out of early-generation EV leases who require more utility and less range anxiety.

Production and Availability

Manufacturing is already in motion to meet the expected demand. Production of the EV3 officially began on August 4, 2026, at Kia's facility in Pesquería, Nuevo León, Mexico. The vehicle will enter the U.S. market in five distinct trim levels: Light, Wind, Land, GT-Line, and GT.

While production is underway, official U.S. pricing has not yet been released by Kia. Market observers are now awaiting the final commercial launch, which is expected to occur by the end of summer 2026.
