GM Returns to Phone Projection with Split-Screen Interface for 2027 Trucks

The 2027 Silverado and Sierra will feature a redesigned cockpit allowing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to coexist with native vehicle controls.

General Motors is introducing a redesigned user interface for its 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks that reintegrates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The move signals a strategic shift in how the automaker balances proprietary vehicle data with the third-party ecosystems consumers demand.

Rather than allowing phone projection to take over the entire dashboard display, the new system confines CarPlay and Android Auto to a large "card window" or tile. This layout allows these services to operate side-by-side with GM's native applications and vehicle controls. According to GM Product Manager Colin McCormick, the goal is for these systems to "coexist" so that drivers can get the "best of both worlds."

The Battle for the Cockpit

This design choice follows a period of tension between GM and phone software providers. Starting in 2023 with the Chevrolet Blazer EV, GM began removing phone projection from its electric vehicle lineup. The company previously sought to eliminate the "clunkiness" of switching between native interfaces and phone mirrors, aiming instead for deeper integration of vehicle-specific data, such as battery state and charging logistics.

While combustion-engine models largely retained phone projection, the 2027 truck interface represents a formal compromise. Sebastian Bauer, GM’s Executive Director of Human Interface Design, stated that the company's objective is to "reduce cognitive load" by providing necessary information exactly when the driver needs it, without forcing a total transition between different software environments.

Unified Architecture and Safety

Beyond the user interface, GM is streamlining the underlying technology. The new system is built on a single scalable foundation used across battery-electric, internal-combustion, and diesel-powered trucks. This unified codebase is intended to simplify the deployment of over-the-air updates across the entire truck portfolio regardless of the powertrain.

In addition to the infotainment changes, GM is updating its Super Cruise driver-assistance technology. The system is receiving a graphical overhaul that includes a driver-assist display providing a representation of what the vehicle's sensors detect, including surrounding traffic and pedestrians.

Industry Implications

GM's pivot highlights the ongoing struggle for control over the "digital cockpit." While automakers prefer proprietary software to collect data and control the user experience, consumer preference for the Apple and Google ecosystems remains a powerful market force. By adopting a split-screen model, GM is attempting to maintain its grip on critical vehicle telemetry while conceding that users are unwilling to abandon their phone-based apps.

Industry observers will now watch to see if this hybrid approach migrates back into GM's electric vehicle lineup or remains a concession reserved for the high-volume truck market. For now, the 2027 Silverado and Sierra serve as the testing ground for whether a shared-screen environment can truly satisfy both the manufacturer and the driver.
