A disguised prototype of the Kia PV7 electric van has been spotted undergoing hot-weather testing in the United States. The sighting comes shortly after the vehicle's official unveiling at IAA Transportation, signaling potential interest in the North American market for Kia's largest purpose-built electric vehicle.
The PV7 serves as the larger sibling in Kia's Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) lineup, following the smaller PV5. The vehicle measures approximately 5.3 meters in length and features a high-performance 800V electrical architecture, which enables a 10% to 80% charge in roughly 25 minutes when using a 350 kW DC fast charger. Power options include 71.5 kWh and 96.2 kWh battery packs, with the Long Range Cargo variant delivering a WLTP range of over 286 miles (460 km). For performance, the front-wheel-drive powertrain produces up to 268 horsepower (200 kW) and approximately 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque, with an all-wheel-drive variant also planned.
A Modular Strategy
The PV7 is a cornerstone of Kia's PBV strategy, which prioritizes modular, purpose-built designs tailored for logistics and passenger transport. The versatility of the platform is significant; the Passenger version is designed to accommodate configurations of 7, 9, or 11 people. Kia has indicated an aggressive expansion of the model line, planning to launch a total of 23 different PV7 variants following the initial Cargo and Passenger releases. While the U.S. testing is a notable signal, Kia has not officially confirmed a North American launch date. The company has confirmed that the PV7 will officially launch in Korea and Europe during the second half of 2027. Regarding future expansion, Kia stated that "additional markets, derivatives, and conversion models will follow." Observers remain skeptical of a guaranteed U.S. release, noting that the smaller PV5 was also spotted testing in the U.S. without a subsequent official launch announcement.
