A massive diagnostic study of electric vehicle batteries suggests that Hyundai is currently leading Tesla in long-term battery health retention. The findings indicate that Hyundai's battery management may offer superior durability for high-mileage drivers.

According to data from Austrian battery diagnostics firm Aviloo, which analyzed more than 500,000 independent EV battery health tests, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 maintained a median State of Health (SoH) of 92.8% after reaching 150,000 kilometers (approximately 93,000 miles). In comparison, Tesla's most popular models showed higher rates of degradation at the same milestone. The Tesla Model Y recorded a median SoH of 90.3%, while the Tesla Model 3 performed lower, with a median health retention of 88.94%.

The Battle of Battery Management

Battery degradation is one of the most critical factors influencing the longevity and resale value of an electric vehicle. While all lithium-ion batteries lose capacity over time due to chemical aging and charge cycles, the rate of this decline is heavily influenced by the vehicle's Battery Management System (BMS) and thermal management. These systems regulate temperature and charging speeds to minimize stress on the cells. Comparative studies like this one serve as a benchmark for how different manufacturers balance performance, charging speed, and long-term stability.

Implications for the EV Market

If these trends hold across larger populations, the results suggest that Hyundai's current battery technology and thermal architecture are more resilient than those used in the Model 3 and Model Y. For consumers, this translates to a slower decline in driving range over the life of the vehicle and potentially higher retained value on the used market. As the first generation of mass-market EVs enters the high-mileage phase of their lifecycles, durability is becoming a more significant selling point than peak acceleration or software features.
