Hyundai Targets Mid-Size EV Gap With New AI-Driven D-Segment SUV

The upcoming SUV leverages a full-stack software-defined platform to bridge the gap between the IONIQ 5 and Santa Fe.

Hyundai Motor Company has revealed plans for a new global electric D-segment SUV, marking a strategic expansion of its EV portfolio. Announced during the 2026 CEO Investor Day, the vehicle is designed to fill a critical gap in the lineup, positioning itself between the IONIQ 5 and the larger Santa Fe.

The new SUV will be built on a new full-stack Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) platform, signaling a departure from traditional hardware-first engineering. Inside, the vehicle will debut the Pleos Connect infotainment system. Built on Android Automotive OS, the system integrates Gleo AI to enhance the user experience. This launch is a cornerstone of a broader initiative to introduce 100 new or refreshed vehicles by 2030.

A Shift Toward Physical AI

This product expansion is part of a fundamental corporate pivot. Hyundai is actively transitioning from a traditional automaker into what it describes as a "tech and physical AI company." This evolution is evidenced by the company's investment in autonomous driving infrastructure, including the development of Atria AI for autonomous driving data collection within Korea.

To support this transition, Hyundai has set aggressive electrification targets. The company aims for electrified vehicles—including battery electrics, hybrids, and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs)—to comprise 60% of its global sales mix by 2030. This represents a significant jump from the 23% share recorded in 2025.

Strategic Market Positioning

The D-segment SUV is specifically designed to target the high-growth mid-to-large electric SUV market. Beyond global reach, the vehicle is a key component of "Phase II" of Hyundai's China strategy, which focuses on the deployment of premium New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) and advanced technology to regain competitiveness in the region.

"It’s a great time to be at Hyundai," said José Muñoz, Hyundai Motor Company president and CEO, reflecting the company's current momentum in the EV space.

Future Outlook

As Hyundai pushes toward a goal of 5.5 million global vehicle sales by 2030, the industry will be watching how the SDV platform performs in real-world conditions. While the D-SUV establishes the hardware footprint, the success of the vehicle will likely depend on the seamless integration of the Pleos Connect system and the scalability of its AI-driven features across other upcoming models in the 100-vehicle pipeline.
