US Renewable Energy Capacity to Overtake Natural Gas by Summer 2027
Analysis of EIA data indicates clean energy infrastructure is on track to surpass the nation's primary fossil fuel source within a year.
United States renewable energy capacity is projected to surpass that of natural gas by the summer of 2027. This shift marks a pivotal moment in the national energy transition as clean energy infrastructure begins to outweigh the primary fossil fuel used for electricity generation.
According to data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) analyzed by the SUN DAY Campaign, renewables' installed capacity is expected to reach approximately 546,219.4 MW by July 1, 2027. In comparison, natural gas capacity is projected to stand at 518,286.3 MW by the same date. This growth is propelled by a surge in utility-scale renewables, which are projected to add 54,125.7 MW of new capacity by June 30, 2027—a 41% increase over the preceding 12-month period. Actual generation is already climbing, with renewably generated electricity growing by 10.9% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.
A Decade of Structural Shift
The projected milestone is the result of a decade-long transformation of the US power grid. Between June 2016 and the first half of 2026, the share of electrical generation provided by renewable energy rose from 16.9% to 30.2%. Solar power has been a primary engine of this expansion, with its total capacity increasing more than nine-fold since mid-2016. While natural gas capacity continues to grow at a slow pace, other traditional sources, including nuclear and various fossil fuels, have seen net declines in capacity.
Implications for Grid Stability
This transition highlights the critical role of energy storage in managing a grid increasingly dependent on intermittent sources like wind and solar. To support this shift, battery energy storage capacity is projected to increase by 44%, reaching 74,454.1 MW by July 1, 2027. The ability to store excess power is essential for maintaining stability as the physical footprint of renewables becomes the dominant force in the US energy landscape.
The Path Forward
Industry leaders suggest that the momentum of clean energy remains strong despite political challenges. Ken Bossong, Executive Director of the SUN DAY Campaign, noted that renewable energy has set growth records for at least a decade and indicated that, notwithstanding roadblocks set up by the Trump administration, signs suggest growth is poised to expand even faster in the coming year. Observers will now watch whether the projected capacity lead translates into a corresponding lead in actual hourly generation as storage capacity continues to scale.
