Volkswagen Debuts ID. California Cruise, Its First Fully Electric Camper
The ID. Buzz-based leisure vehicle brings V2L power and integrated camping gear to the iconic California lineage.
Volkswagen has officially entered the electric leisure vehicle market with the debut of the ID. California Cruise. Unveiled at Caravan Salon 2026 in Düsseldorf, the vehicle marks the first fully electric iteration of the company's legendary California camper line.
Based on the ID. Buzz Pro, the ID. California Cruise will be available in both short and long wheelbase configurations. The camper is designed for road trips and weekend getaways, featuring a dedicated sleeping area with a bed measuring 2.03m by 1.20m and a 9cm thick folding comfort mattress. To ensure utility in the field, Volkswagen has equipped the interior with blackout blinds and ventilation grilles. In Germany, the vehicle carries a starting price of €60,761, with first customer deliveries scheduled to begin in early 2027.
The Shift to Electric Leisure
Since the initial launch of the ID. Buzz in 2022, Volkswagen has faced sustained demand from enthusiasts wanting a modern, electric version of the classic "Bulli" camper. The ID. California Cruise is not a standalone project but the first entry in a planned family of California EVs that the automaker intends to roll out over the coming years. This transition reflects a broader industry shift toward sustainable tourism and the electrification of specialized vehicle segments, as manufacturers move away from internal combustion engines for long-haul leisure travel.
Powering the Great Outdoors
One of the primary challenges for electric campers is energy management, which Volkswagen addresses through vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities. The ID. California Cruise provides a continuous power output of 2,000W, with a peak capacity of 3.6kW, allowing users to power external appliances without needing a separate generator. Additionally, the vehicle includes a specialized "California mode," which optimizes energy consumption to allow specific USB ports and lights to remain operational for up to 48 hours overnight, ensuring that basic utilities remain available during extended stays.
Market Implications and Outlook
By integrating high-capacity V2L functions and dedicated camping software, Volkswagen is attempting to set the technical standard for the emerging electric leisure segment. The move transforms one of automotive history's most iconic camper lineages into a platform for sustainable travel, potentially forcing competitors to accelerate their own electric camper programs to remain relevant in a changing regulatory environment.
While the vehicle is poised for a strong European launch, its global availability remains a point of speculation. Current reports indicate the ID. California Cruise is not expected to be sold in the U.S. market. Observers will be watching to see if the success of this first model prompts Volkswagen to expand the California EV family into other international territories to capture a wider share of the global adventure travel market.
