IONNA Leads 2026 JD Power EV Charging Satisfaction Study
The OEM-backed joint venture outperformed established rivals by prioritizing site amenities and reliability.
IONNA has emerged as the highest-satisfaction DC fast-charging network in the United States, according to the 2026 JD Power US Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Public Charging Study. The ranking marks a significant shift in the infrastructure landscape, as a newcomer disrupts the dominance of established charging providers.
IONNA secured the top spot with a satisfaction score reported between 803 and 807 out of 1,000. This performance placed the network ahead of other premium offerings, including the Mercedes-Benz Charging Network, which scored 797, and the Rivian Adventure Network, which followed with 755. The network operates as a massive joint venture backed by eight major automakers: BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota. To achieve these results, IONNA utilizes Alpitronic hardware paired with software developed in-house.
The Shift Toward Destination Charging
IONNA's success comes amid a broader improvement in the American charging experience. Overall satisfaction for DC fast charging rose by 12 points to 666 in 2026, while charging failures plummeted to a record low of 12%. In contrast, Level 2 charging satisfaction declined to 595, largely due to persistent issues with payment systems and session starts.
Central to IONNA's strategy is the "Rechargery" site design. Rather than treating charging as a purely technical transaction, the Rechargery concept treats it as a hospitality experience. These sites emphasize high-end amenities, including protective canopies, clean restrooms, food options, and dedicated lounges, reflecting an industry-wide pivot toward "destination" charging where the environment is as critical as the kilowatt speed.
Implications for the EV Market
This result suggests that a coordinated, OEM-backed approach to infrastructure can effectively challenge the market lead held by networks like Tesla's Superchargers. By focusing on the user experience and site quality rather than just hardware deployment, IONNA has demonstrated that reliability and comfort are the primary drivers of consumer satisfaction.
Seth Cutler, CEO of IONNA, noted that the company's late entry into the market provided a strategic advantage. "Because we’re not first to market, we’ve been able to learn from others, and we’re determined to redefine public charging and quality," Cutler said.
Future Outlook
As the industry moves toward standardized, high-quality experiences across multiple brands, the success of the joint venture model provides a blueprint for other automakers. The market will now watch to see if IONNA can maintain these high satisfaction levels as it scales its footprint across the U.S. and whether other networks will adopt similar hospitality-focused site designs to remain competitive.
