Jaguar Land Rover Debuts Range Rover Electric With In-House Powertrain
The $138,000 luxury SUV targets 333 miles of range and features a custom-built battery system.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has officially revealed the Range Rover Electric, marking the brand's high-stakes entry into the luxury all-electric SUV market. The vehicle combines the signature refinement of the Range Rover line with a proprietary electric architecture designed to maintain the brand's off-road heritage.
The SUV enters the market with a starting price of $138,000, which is approximately $25,000 more than the entry-trim Range Rover SE. Under the hood, the vehicle utilizes a twin-stacked battery with a usable capacity of 118.5 kWh, targeting an EPA range of 333 miles (600 km WLTP). Performance figures are substantial, with a powertrain delivering 542 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, enabling a 0-60 mph sprint in 4.3 seconds. To minimize downtime, JLR equipped the vehicle with a 350 kW peak charging rate, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in 22 minutes.
A Strategic Delay for In-House Tech
The Range Rover Electric arrives five years after its initial announcement, a timeline JLR attributes to a commitment to internal development. Rather than utilizing third-party platforms, JLR developed the battery, drive units, and thermal management systems entirely in-house, a process that resulted in roughly 300 new patents. Martin Limpert, Managing Director for Range Rover, noted that the company prioritized precision over speed, stating, "It took us longer than we expected because when you do something in-house completely, you identify roadblocks. And it was more important for us to get it right than get it fast."
Limpert further explained the engineering trade-offs involved in the build, noting that increasing one parameter often requires sacrificing another. "We could have gone for more energy, but that would mean a heavier battery and less performance capability," he said.
Engineering for the Wild
To ensure the electric transition didn't compromise capability, JLR built the SUV on the Modular Longitudinal Architecture-Flex (MLA-Flex). This platform increases torsional rigidity by 50% compared to non-EV versions, enhancing both luxury ride quality and off-road precision. The vehicle maintains rigorous off-road specifications, including 8 inches of ground clearance, a 33.2-degree approach angle, a 28.1-degree departure angle, and a 22.3-degree breakover angle.
According to InsideEVs, the SUV can climb slopes up to 45 degrees, and its one-pedal driving system is functional on ascents up to 33 degrees. The electric powertrain also allows for superior traction management, with motor speeds adjusting every 50 milliseconds and wheel slip managed 100 times faster than in combustion engines.
Market Implications and Outlook
This launch is a critical test of whether the ultra-wealthy luxury segment is ready to abandon internal combustion when the experience remains nearly identical. JLR's research suggests that a single charge will cover 97% of typical customer journeys, indicating that extreme range was less important to their target demographic than refinement and status.
Early interest suggests a potential expansion of the brand's customer base. JLR claims that 80,000 prospective buyers have expressed interest in the model, with 70% of those individuals being new to the brand. The industry will now watch to see if this proprietary approach to EV development provides a competitive edge over rivals using generic electric platforms.
