LG Energy Solution: Scaling Hurdles Delay Solid-State EV Batteries

The battery giant warns that manufacturing large-form cells is a critical barrier, predicting smartphones will adopt the tech a decade before EVs.

LG Energy Solution (LGES) has signaled that the transition to solid-state batteries for electric vehicles faces a steeper climb than industry hype suggests. The company warns that the gap between laboratory prototypes and industrial-scale production remains a critical barrier to mass-market adoption.

During a media roundtable at its Lansing, Michigan plant, Robert Lee, North America president for LGES, stated that the primary obstacle is the production of large form factor cells. While small-scale versions of the technology are achievable, Lee noted that most companies are currently struggling to manufacture the larger cells required to power a vehicle. Because of these scaling difficulties, Lee predicts that consumers will see solid-state batteries in smartphones and specialized applications roughly a decade before the technology becomes viable for the EV market.

The Race for the 'Holy Grail'

Solid-state batteries are widely regarded as the 'holy grail' of energy storage because they offer the potential for significantly higher energy density, faster charging times, and the elimination of the fire risks associated with liquid electrolytes. This has sparked a global arms race among battery makers and automakers. In China, industry leaders including CATL, BYD, and Geely are pursuing an aggressive timeline, targeting 2027 for pilot programs with the goal of wider deployment by the end of the decade.

Industrial Reality vs. Marketing Hype

The caution from LGES, one of the world's largest battery suppliers, highlights a growing divide between theoretical success and manufacturing reality. While startups like Factorial and Solid Power, along with OEMs such as BMW and Stellantis, continue to test prototypes, the admission that large-scale production is a "significant hurdle" suggests that the 'solid-state revolution' for the average driver is not imminent.

This realization is pushing the industry to pivot toward interim chemistries to bridge the performance gap. Manufacturers are increasingly focusing on lithium-manganese-rich (LMR) and sodium-ion batteries, which offer incremental improvements in cost and density without the extreme manufacturing complexities of a fully solid-state architecture.

What to Watch

As the industry moves forward, the focus will shift from prototype range claims to evidence of scalable manufacturing processes. The coming years will reveal whether Chinese firms can meet their 2027 pilot targets or if the manufacturing bottlenecks identified by LGES are universal. Until a company demonstrates the ability to produce large-form cells at a competitive cost and volume, solid-state technology will likely remain confined to small electronics and high-end niche applications.
