Octopus Energy Launches Charge App to Unify North American EV Networks

The free app provides access to 211,221 chargers across 24 networks without adding pricing markups.

Octopus Energy has launched Octopus Charge, a free mobile application for iOS and Android designed to streamline public electric vehicle charging across North America. The move aims to solve the chronic fragmentation of the charging landscape by allowing drivers to find and pay for power through a single interface.

The app provides immediate access to 211,221 EV chargers integrated from 24 different partner networks. Participating networks include major providers such as ChargePoint, EVgo, Blink, bp pulse, Shell Recharge, FLO, EV Connect, Circle K, Circuit Électrique, and FPL EVolution. To maintain cost transparency, Octopus Charge does not mark up the per-kWh cost, instead passing through the original pricing set by the charging network.

The fight against app fatigue

Octopus Charge is the North American iteration of "Octopus Electroverse," a service that debuted in the UK and Europe in 2020. The European version has scaled significantly, now providing access to more than 1 million public charge points across 40 countries. By bringing this model to the US and Canada, Octopus Energy is attempting to replicate that success in a market where drivers often must manage a dozen different accounts to ensure reliable long-distance travel.

Beyond simple payment, the app integrates several utility tools to reduce driver anxiety. These include live charger availability updates, compatibility checks to ensure the plug matches the vehicle, and detailed pricing information. The platform also includes a dedicated EV-specific route planner and information on nearby amenities to improve the overall charging experience.

Implications for EV adoption

Fragmented infrastructure remains one of the primary barriers to widespread EV adoption. The requirement to download multiple apps and maintain separate payment profiles for different networks creates significant friction for new users. By consolidating these networks into a single discovery and payment layer without adding a premium to the cost of electricity, Octopus Energy is targeting "app fatigue" and attempting to increase driver confidence during interstate or cross-border trips.

What to watch

As the app rolls out, the industry will be watching to see if other major networks join the consortium to further increase the charger count. While the current 211,221 chargers represent a significant footprint, the long-term success of the platform depends on the continued expansion of partner networks and the stability of the pass-through pricing model in a volatile energy market.
