UK-based charging network Osprey has launched 'Autocharge' technology, allowing registered electric vehicle drivers to begin charging sessions simply by plugging in. The move aims to eliminate the friction of using mobile apps or RFID cards at the point of service.

Under the new system, the charging station identifies the vehicle immediately upon connection. Once the vehicle is recognized, the session starts automatically and the system applies the best available pricing to the user's account. According to Osprey, this technology is integrated into a broader software platform known as 'Osprey Iris.'

The Battle Against Fragmentation

For most EV drivers, the current charging landscape is a fragmented ecosystem. Most networks require users to maintain separate accounts, download individual apps, or carry multiple RFID cards to access power. While the industry has a universal standard known as 'Plug & Charge' (ISO 15118), Autocharge is a network-specific implementation. It achieves a similar result by linking the vehicle's unique identifier to a specific user account within the Osprey network.

Implications for EV Adoption

Creating a 'plug and walk away' experience is a critical milestone for the industry as it seeks to mirror the seamless simplicity of traditional petrol stations. Reducing the cognitive load and physical steps required to charge a vehicle removes a significant barrier to mainstream EV adoption. However, because Autocharge is proprietary to Osprey rather than a universal standard, it does not solve the broader issue of network silos. Users must still register their vehicles with every individual network they intend to use, potentially adding another layer of administrative overhead for the driver.

What to Watch

As more networks deploy proprietary shortcuts to improve user experience, the industry remains split between these bespoke solutions and the slower rollout of the ISO 15118 universal standard. The success of Osprey Iris will likely depend on whether drivers find the convenience of network-specific registration worth the effort, or if they continue to push for a truly unified, cross-network charging standard.
