PG&E Expands V2X Program with New EV Support and $17,000 in Incentives

The utility is broadening bidirectional charging support to include Tesla, Kia, and Volvo to turn EVs into grid assets.

PG&E has expanded its Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) program to include a wider array of electric vehicles and bidirectional chargers. The move allows residential and commercial customers to use their EVs as mobile batteries for home backup power and grid stabilization.

Under the expanded program, eligible residential customers can access stacked incentives totaling up to $17,000. This includes a $2,500 upfront payment—which increases to $3,000 for those in disadvantaged communities—and a $1,500 Early Adopter Incentive available to the first 250 enrollees. An additional $13,000 in funding is available through a California Energy Commission grant for specific hardware combinations. Commercial incentives are tiered by charger capacity: 3-phase chargers under 50 kW qualify for $2,500 ($3,000 for disadvantaged communities), while those 50 kW or above qualify for $4,500 ($5,000 for disadvantaged communities).

Expanding Hardware Compatibility

The program now supports a diverse range of vehicle and charger pairings. Eligible combinations include the Nissan Leaf (2018-2025), Volvo EX90 (2025), and Polestar 3 (2025) when paired with the dcbel Ara charger. Additionally, the Kia EV9 (2024+) and Kia EV6 (2025+) are supported via the Wallbox Quasar 2. PG&E has also added the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt, the Cadillac Celestiq (2025+), and the Cadillac Escalade IQ/IQL (2025+) to the eligible list.

This expansion follows a 2024 California law aimed at establishing bidirectional charging standards. PG&E previously integrated the Tesla Cybertruck as the first AC vehicle-to-grid (V2G) asset in the state and conducted earlier pilots with GM Energy to test the viability of using EVs as distributed energy resources.

The Shift to Distributed Energy

By lowering the financial barrier to expensive bidirectional hardware, PG&E is transitioning V2X from small-scale experimentation to a comprehensive utility strategy. This shift allows the utility to treat consumer vehicles as a decentralized power plant that can feed energy back into the grid during peak demand, reducing the risk of brownouts and lowering the need for expensive peaker plants.

For the consumer, the benefit is primarily energy security. Bidirectional charging transforms an EV from a transportation tool into a critical piece of home infrastructure capable of maintaining power during grid outages. David Almeida, Director of Clean Energy Transportation at PG&E, stated that broadening the mix of eligible vehicles and chargers helps customers "turn their EV into a home backup and a grid asset."

Looking Ahead

Enrollment for the expanded program remains open until June 30, 2027. As more manufacturers adopt bidirectional standards, the program is expected to serve as a blueprint for how utilities can integrate private EV fleets into the broader energy ecosystem. The success of this rollout will likely depend on the adoption rate of the supported dcbel and Wallbox hardware among the newly eligible vehicle owners.
