South Korea's EV Surge Forces Tire Industry Pivot to High-Value Tech

Rapid adoption of electrified vehicles is driving South Korean manufacturers to redesign tires for higher weight and instant torque.

The rapid adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles in South Korea is forcing a fundamental redesign of the tire industry. As electrified powertrains become the dominant choice for new car buyers, manufacturers are pivoting toward high-value, specialized rubber to meet the grueling demands of battery-powered transport.

According to data from the Maeil Business Newspaper, electrified vehicles—comprising both battery electric (EV) and hybrid (HEV) models—accounted for 57.4% of all new vehicle registrations in South Korea during the first half of this year. This is a significant jump from the 45.5% recorded during the same period last year. The growth is led by a massive spike in pure EVs, which saw registrations rise 113.6% year-on-year to 198,509 units. Hybrid vehicles also maintained a strong presence, totaling 289,814 units and representing 34.1% of all new vehicle sales.

The Engineering Challenge

Electrified vehicles present a different set of physical stresses compared to traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. The primary challenge is weight; massive battery packs increase the overall vehicle mass, putting constant pressure on the tire's structure. Furthermore, electric motors deliver high torque instantaneously, which accelerates tread wear and requires superior grip and load capacity.

Noise is another critical factor. Without the masking sound of a combustion engine, road and tire noise become far more audible to passengers, necessitating the integration of advanced noise-reduction technologies. To address these issues, South Korea's major tire players—Hankook, Kumho, and Nexen—are accelerating their research and development cycles.

Strategic Material Shifts

Manufacturers are moving away from standard rubber compounds toward high-performance materials. For example, Hankook Tire has introduced the iON series, which utilizes a reinforced belt made of aramid fibers specifically to manage the increased weight of EVs. This shift represents a broader trend of treating the tire not as a commodity, but as a precision-engineered component.

Market Implications

This transition is transforming the tire market from a volume-based commodity business into a high-value technology sector. For manufacturers, the stakes are highest during the vehicle development phase. Securing Original Equipment (OE) contracts—where a tire is specified by the carmaker for a new model—is now the primary strategic goal. These contracts are critical because they establish a long-term pipeline for high-margin replacement tire (RE) sales as the original sets wear out.

The Path Forward

As the market matures, the industry will likely focus on further reducing development timelines and enhancing durability. While the current surge in South Korea provides a blueprint for other markets, the industry continues to monitor how these specialized tires perform over the full lifecycle of the vehicle. The ability to balance load-bearing capacity with noise reduction and longevity will determine which manufacturers dominate the next era of mobility.
