Kia Debuts PV7 Electric Van to Scale Modular PBV Strategy
The large-format electric van features 800V fast charging and a modular architecture supporting 23 variants.
Kia has expanded its electric commercial portfolio with the debut of the PV7, a large-scale electric van unveiled at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover, Germany. The vehicle marks the second entry in the company's Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) lineup, signaling a strategic move to capture a larger share of the light commercial vehicle market.
Designed for extreme versatility, the PV7 is available in both Passenger and Cargo configurations. The van measures 5,350 mm in length, 1,995 mm in width, and 1,990 mm in height, supported by a 3,500 mm wheelbase. The Passenger variant can accommodate up to nine people globally, though the Korean market version will support up to 11. For logistics, the Cargo model provides between 6.1 and 8 cubic meters of space with a maximum payload of 1,200 kg.
A Modular Approach to Utility
The PV7 introduces a modular architecture that Kia claims will eventually support 23 different variants. A central feature of this strategy is the use of "top hats"—interchangeable body styles that allow the vehicle to be customized for specific commercial needs. This follows the launch of the smaller PV5, which has already established itself as a top-selling small EV van in Europe.
Under the hood, the PV7 offers two NCM battery pack options: a 71.5 kWh unit and a larger 96.2 kWh pack. Performance figures reach up to 268 horsepower (200 kW) and 309 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque. For operators prioritizing distance, the Long Range Cargo version delivers a WLTP-certified range of over 460 km (285 miles). To minimize downtime, the van utilizes an 800V architecture, enabling a charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 25 minutes when using a 350 kW DC fast charger.
Market Implications and Outlook
By entering the larger light commercial vehicle segment, Kia is positioning the PV7 to compete directly with established diesel and electric staples, such as the Ford Transit. The combination of high payload capacity and rapid charging infrastructure is an attempt to modernize the utility market, providing scalable solutions for shuttle services, last-mile logistics, and large-family transport.
Industry observers will be watching how the "top hat" customization model is adopted by fleet operators in real-world settings. While the modularity promises efficiency, the actual deployment of the 23 planned variants remains to be seen. Kia has scheduled sales for the PV7 to begin in Korea and Europe during the second half of 2027.
