Tesla and SpaceX to Build $16.8 Billion 'Terafab' Chip Plant in Texas
The massive semiconductor facility aims to secure the compute future for Optimus robots, Cybercabs, and orbital data centers.
Tesla and SpaceX have announced the construction of Terafab, a semiconductor fabrication plant in Grimes County, Texas. The project represents a strategic move to vertically integrate chip production to meet the escalating compute demands of AI and robotics.
The companies will make an initial investment of $16.8 billion to establish the facility north of Houston. According to project details, Terafab is planned to encompass over 100 million square feet of manufacturing space, where it will handle the manufacturing, packaging, and testing of advanced semiconductors. The plant is expected to create at least 3,000 jobs for residents of Grimes and neighboring Brazos County. To mitigate environmental impact on local resources, the facility will draw its water from the Gibbons Creek Reservoir rather than relying on local groundwater.
Scaling for the AI Era
The initiative is driven by the need for specialized hardware that current global semiconductor supplies cannot sufficiently provide. Terafab will produce chips optimized for edge computing and inference, specifically designed for Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots and its autonomous Cybercab fleet. Additionally, the plant will manufacture high-power chips intended for SpaceX’s space-based data centers. Elon Musk described the facility as "the largest and most valuable building on Earth by far."
Strategic Independence
By building its own fabrication hub, the Musk-led companies aim to reduce their reliance on external vendors such as NVIDIA and TSMC. This shift toward vertical integration allows for recursive improvements in chip design, combining logic and memory with advanced packaging in a single location. Beyond the terrestrial benefits, the project signals a push toward "orbital compute," utilizing space-based AI training and inference to bypass Earth-bound constraints regarding power, cooling, and land availability.
