University at Buffalo deploys first electric buses in push for zero-emissions campus

The university adds eight 40-foot electric transit buses to its Stampede fleet, cutting nearly 6,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

The University at Buffalo (UB) has integrated eight new 40-foot electric transit buses into its Stampede fleet, marking the institution's first transition away from diesel for campus transportation. The deployment is a cornerstone of a broader four-year electrification effort designed to modernize student and staff transit.

Executed in partnership with solutions provider WeDriveU and fleet electrification specialists Zenobē, the new buses are expected to serve approximately 16,000 passengers daily. The shift is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55.6%, eliminating nearly 6,000 tons of CO2 equivalent emissions. This environmental impact is roughly equivalent to removing 1,395 gas-powered cars from the road.

A Roadmap to Zero Emissions

This transition is part of UB's "10 in 10" roadmap, an ambitious strategic plan to achieve a zero-emissions campus by 2030. By setting this target, the university is moving significantly faster than state mandates; the 2030 goal arrives 15 years ahead of the 2045 deadline for heavy-duty vehicle electrification established by New York Executive Order 22.

Christopher Austin, UB Director of Parking and Transportation, stated that the goal is to maintain safe and reliable transportation while simultaneously reducing the university's environmental footprint.

Overcoming Operational Hurdles

The move serves as a model for institutional fleet electrification, demonstrating how large organizations can navigate the technical complexities of moving away from diesel dependency. A primary challenge in such transitions is ensuring that charging infrastructure is robust enough to prevent service interruptions.

Matt Curwood, Vice President of Business Development for Transit at Zenobē North America, noted that institutions require certainty that electric buses will perform daily. He attributed this reliability to thoughtful planning and long-term operational support provided through the partnership with Zenobē.

The Path Forward

As UB continues its four-year electrification journey, the success of these initial eight buses will likely dictate the pace of further fleet expansions. The university's aggressive timeline puts it at the forefront of campus sustainability, providing a blueprint for other public institutions facing similar mandates. Observers will be watching to see if the "10 in 10" roadmap remains on track as the university scales its charging infrastructure to support a fully electric transit system by the end of the decade.
