Volvo Tests 50-Ton EC500 Electric Excavator With Continuous Grid Power

The new heavy-duty machine uses a dual-power architecture to eliminate charging downtime in high-intensity construction sites.

Volvo Construction Equipment (CE) has launched pre-production testing of the EC500 Electric in Norway, marking a significant scale-up in zero-emission heavy machinery. The 50-ton class excavator is designed to match the performance of traditional diesel models while removing the productivity bottlenecks typically associated with large-scale electrification.

The EC500 Electric features a dual-power architecture that allows it to operate without traditional recharging stops. The machine utilizes a 35-meter cable reel that connects the excavator directly to the power grid for continuous operation. For autonomous movement or sites without immediate grid access, the machine is equipped with an on-board high-voltage battery providing between two and three hours of continuous use. Technical specifications confirm the machine has an operating weight of 49,006 kg, a bucket capacity of 3.03 cubic meters, and is powered by a 250 kW electric motor.

Scaling Zero-Emission Power

The move into the 50-ton class represents a strategic shift for the construction industry as it attempts to decarbonize heavy-duty job sites. While Volvo has previously deployed smaller electric units, larger machines face steeper challenges regarding energy density. The primary obstacle for heavy-duty EVs has been the significant downtime required to recharge massive battery arrays, which often makes diesel the only practical choice for high-intensity work.

To address this, Volvo implemented a 400V electrical architecture. This system is specifically designed to manage power fluctuations and grid conditions common on industrial job sites, ensuring the 250 kW motor maintains consistent performance regardless of the power source.

Impact on Heavy Industry

The ability to operate a 50-ton machine continuously via grid power effectively removes "charging anxiety" for fleet managers. This development makes electrification viable for the most demanding applications, including quarrying, road building, and tunneling. By eliminating the need to pause operations for battery replenishment, Volvo is positioning the EC500 as a direct replacement for diesel in environments where productivity loss is not an option.

Path to Production

Volvo CE is currently utilizing demanding Norwegian sites to refine the machine's performance under real-world stress. These tests will determine how the hybrid battery-cable system handles the rigors of heavy excavation before the machine hits the wider market. Official production and commercial launch of the EC500 Electric are expected in Spring 2027.
