Waymo Deploys 'Ojai' Robotaxis to Slash Fleet Costs
The shift to Chinese-manufactured electric minivans marks Alphabet's move from proof-of-concept to scalable commercial operations.
Waymo has begun offering paid passenger rides in its new "Ojai" electric minivans across San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. The rollout signals a strategic pivot from retrofitted consumer cars to a purpose-built fleet designed for commercial scale.
The Ojai vehicles are manufactured by the Chinese brand Zeekr, owned by Geely, and are equipped with Waymo's sixth-generation autonomous driving suite. This hardware package consists of 13 cameras, four lidar sensors, and six radar units. To support the launch, Waymo has imported more than 3,200 Ojai vehicles into the United States, despite facing steep tariffs of 102.5%.
A Shift in Architecture
For years, Waymo relied heavily on retrofitted Jaguar I-Pace EVs to build its ride-hailing service. While effective for testing, these vehicles were expensive and not optimized for passenger turnover. In contrast, the Ojai is built on Zeekr's SEA-M architecture, which prioritizes accessibility with a flat floor, low step-in height, and B-pillarless sliding doors.
This transition is primarily driven by the need to reduce capital expenditures. The estimated combined cost of the Ojai's chassis and Gen 6 hardware is approximately $103,000. This represents a significant reduction compared to the estimated $200,000 cost associated with the Jaguar I-Pace fleet, effectively cutting vehicle costs by nearly half.
The Path to Profitability
By slashing the cost per vehicle and increasing passenger capacity through the minivan form factor, Waymo is positioning itself for high-margin commercial operations. Kirsten Korosec of TechCrunch noted that while the launch of the blue-hued minivan may not solve every challenge, it provides the company with a "real chance at scale and revenue generation."
However, the strategy introduces new vulnerabilities. By relying on Chinese manufacturing for its primary fleet, Waymo has exposed itself to significant political risk and the volatility of international trade policy, as evidenced by the current triple-digit tariffs on the imports.
Future Outlook
Waymo intends for the Gen 6 Driver to be modular, with plans to integrate the technology into other platforms, including the Hyundai Ioniq 5. This modularity is intended to improve performance across diverse weather conditions, including snow, as the company looks to expand beyond its current sunny-climate hubs. The industry will now watch to see if the lower cost of the Ojai fleet can offset the burden of trade tariffs and accelerate the company's path to mass deployment.
