Abbott and Google Health have launched a multi-year partnership to integrate the Lingo continuous glucose monitor (CGM) into the Google Health app. The move aims to provide adults who do not use insulin with AI-driven insights into their metabolic health.

Under the agreement, users of the Lingo over-the-counter CGM can sync their glucose data directly with the Google Health app. This integration allows the Google Health Coach to analyze glucose fluctuations and provide personalized lifestyle and nutrition recommendations. Beyond the consumer app, the two companies are launching a large-scale research study that will combine glucose readings with wearable data, laboratory results, and survey responses to refine AI coaching and develop future product features.

The Shift Toward Consumer Metabolic Health

Continuous glucose monitors were originally developed as critical medical devices for people with diabetes to manage insulin levels. However, a growing trend of "biohacking" has seen non-diabetics adopt the technology to optimize energy levels and weight loss. This shift has not been without criticism; medical experts, including those from Johns Hopkins, have cautioned that the benefits for healthy adults are often unclear. Because healthy bodies regulate glucose spikes naturally, there is a risk that laypeople may misinterpret the data.
