Anthropic Brings Claude Cowork to Chrome Side Panel for Agentic Web Workflows

Anthropic has updated its 'Claude for Chrome' extension to integrate full Claude Cowork sessions directly into the browser's side panel. This move transforms the extension from a passive assistant into an active agent capable of executing complex workflows across the web.
The integration allows Claude to interact with the web by leveraging a user's existing active browser sessions and logins. The AI can now navigate pages, click links, enter text, and fill out forms on the user's behalf. Crucially, conversations initiated within the Chrome side panel are now saved to Claude's global history, meaning they can be resumed seamlessly across desktop, web, and mobile applications.
The Shift to a Research Layer
Claude Cowork is designed as an environment for multi-step project work involving deep research and file management. Previously, the Chrome extension operated as a more isolated chat experience, creating a gap where side panel sessions remained separate from other Claude app sessions. By merging Cowork into the sidebar, Anthropic is positioning the browser as a "research layer." This allows the AI to gather data from the web and feed it directly into larger deliverables, such as PowerPoint decks or Excel models, produced by the Cowork engine.
