A physical AI agent device named Aiden has debuted a hardware-centric approach to mobile automation, earning a "Proof of Usefulness" score of 60 during a HackerNoon hackathon. The device aims to automate tasks on smartphones and computers by mimicking human interaction directly through the hardware interface.

Unlike traditional AI agents that rely on software integrations, Aiden connects to a device via USB. It operates by capturing the screen and executing simulated inputs—including tapping, swiping, and typing—based on voice commands. By operating a device the way a person would, the system closes the automation gap, requiring no API access or device jailbreaking to function across different applications.

The Technical Architecture

The project is currently in a pre-launch dev-board phase and is being developed using a build-in-public methodology. To achieve hardware-level control, the team utilizes a multi-language tech stack. The core agent and concurrency management are written in Go, while the hardware capture layer for HDMI and USB is handled via C++. Python is employed for the project's tooling and benchmarking processes.

While the Proof of Usefulness score of 60 is modest, the development team attributes this figure to the project's current stage. The team noted a preference for an honest score over an inflated number they could not back up, given that the device does not yet have a live user base.

Shifting the Agent Paradigm

Most contemporary AI agents are confined to chat interfaces or limited to applications that provide open APIs. This creates a significant barrier for automating essential services—such as banking or ride-hailing apps—that typically lack public API access for security or proprietary reasons. By shifting the point of interaction from the software layer to the hardware layer, Aiden removes the dependency on third-party permissions.

This approach allows for immediate AI automation on existing hardware. Rather than waiting for the release of next-generation, AI-native smartphones, users could theoretically add agent capabilities to their current devices via a physical peripheral.

Future Outlook

As Aiden moves beyond the dev-board stage, the focus will likely shift toward refining the accuracy of its screen-capture interpretation and the reliability of its simulated inputs. Because the system operates outside the traditional app ecosystem, it avoids the restrictions imposed by OS developers and app creators.

Observers will be watching to see if this hardware-first model can scale beyond a developer tool into a consumer product, and whether the "Proof of Usefulness" increases as the device moves toward a formal launch.
