TCL Expands NXTPAPER Smartphone Lineup to Combat Digital Eye Strain
The electronics giant is rolling out a global series of devices featuring matte, paper-like displays that bridge the gap between AMOLED screens and e-ink readers.
TCL has expanded its NXTPAPER smartphone lineup globally, introducing a series of devices designed to reduce eye strain and screen glare. The rollout targets a growing market of users seeking a middle ground between high-performance mobile displays and the visual comfort of e-readers.
The expansion includes budget-friendly options for the U.S. market: the TCL 50 XL NXTPAPER 5G and the 50 XE NXTPAPER 5G. These devices are priced at $230 and $200, respectively, with the 50 XL slated for a Q2 launch via Metro by T-Mobile. In other markets, such as the Philippines, TCL has introduced higher-end hardware including the NXTPAPER 70 Pro and the NXTPAPER 60 Ultra. The latter features a 7.2-inch NXTPAPER 4.0 screen and carries a price tag of PHP 35,995.
The Technology Gap
TCL first introduced NXTPAPER technology in 2021, initially deploying it in tablets to address the glare and fatigue associated with traditional glossy screens. Unlike e-ink displays, which are eye-friendly but suffer from slow refresh rates and a lack of color, NXTPAPER technology provides a full-color, high-refresh-rate experience. It achieves this through a matte, reflection-free finish that mimics the visual properties of paper while maintaining the functionality of a standard smartphone screen.
Market Implications
As global screen time continues to rise, there is an increasing demand for "eye-care" hardware. By integrating this technology into smartphones, TCL is positioning itself to capture a niche of productivity-focused users and heavy readers who find standard LCD or AMOLED screens too fatiguing for long-term use. This approach offers a hybrid solution: the speed and versatility of a modern smartphone combined with the reduced ocular stress typically reserved for dedicated e-readers.
Future Outlook
While the technology has now reached the U.S. smartphone market—a milestone noted by Android Police—the industry will be watching to see if other manufacturers adopt similar matte-filter hardware. The success of the NXTPAPER series will likely depend on whether consumers prioritize visual comfort over the high-contrast vibrancy of traditional glossy displays. For now, the rollout establishes a clear alternative for users who consume significant amounts of text and media but wish to avoid the limitations of e-ink.
