Apple Enters Foldable Market With iPhone Duo to Challenge Android Dominance
The tech giant's first foldable focuses on hardware refinement and ecosystem integration to disrupt a market led by Samsung.
Apple officially entered the foldable smartphone market in September 2026 with the launch of the iPhone Duo. The move marks a strategic shift for the company, applying its signature late-entry refinement to a category that has been dominated by Android manufacturers for nearly eight years.
Unveiled at Apple's September media event and released in October 2026 across more than 70 countries, the iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch inner display. A key hardware highlight is the inner display's crease, which is reported to be less visible than those found on many Android competitors, a result attributed in part to the use of nano-texture glass. To assist with navigation on the larger screen, Apple implemented a vertical Dock positioned along the right side of the inner display.
The Strategy of Refinement
For the past eight years, Samsung and other Android OEMs have treated the foldable category as a testing ground, iterating on hinge durability and multitasking software. Apple followed its traditional playbook by waiting for the category to mature, allowing the company to learn from the engineering failures of its predecessors. Rather than attempting to reinvent the hardware, Apple focused on the integration of hardware and software to create a more cohesive user experience.
Market Implications
Despite the late arrival, the iPhone Duo is being positioned as a new mainstream reference point for the industry. iTechify Editorial noted that while Apple arrived late to the party, it did so with a device that "feels considered in ways its predecessors often didn’t." This pressure is particularly acute for Samsung, which has struggled with software consistency and visible screen creases over several generations of devices. By prioritizing polish, Apple may force Android makers to stop treating foldables as beta hardware and instead prioritize developer enforcement and a finished feel.
Remaining Hurdles
While Apple marketed the device as a leap in software polish, the transition to a foldable form factor has not been without friction. Independent reviews from outlets including iTechify and ShatnersWorld report that the iPhone Duo still suffers from app letterboxing and black bars on the inner display—issues that have long plagued Android foldables. Whether Apple can solve these scaling problems through future software updates remains the primary question for the device's long-term adoption.
