Apple enters foldable market with iPhone Duo to challenge Samsung Z Fold 8
Apple's first foldable leverages a 2nm chip and superior durability ratings to target the premium market.
Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the launch of the iPhone Duo, a device designed to compete directly with Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8. The move marks a significant shift for the company, which has long avoided the category while Samsung established a multi-generation lead in foldable technology.
The iPhone Duo adopts a "passport-style" squat form factor, featuring a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, both supporting 120Hz refresh rates. The inner screen provides a resolution of 1,878 x 2,670. Under the hood, Apple is leveraging a hardware advantage with the A20 Pro chip built on a 2nm process, whereas the Galaxy Z Fold 8 utilizes the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 on a 3nm process.
Both devices make similar compromises in photography, as neither the iPhone Duo nor the Galaxy Z Fold 8 includes a dedicated telephoto camera. Instead, they rely on wide and ultrawide setups, with Apple utilizing a 48MP system and Samsung opting for 50MP sensors. However, Apple has pushed further on build quality; the iPhone Duo carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, surpassing the IP48 rating found on the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
The Battle for the Premium User
This launch represents a strategic attempt to mainstream foldables for a wider audience. While Samsung continues to lead in software productivity—supporting up to five simultaneous apps—Apple is positioning the Duo as the superior choice for users who previously avoided foldables due to durability concerns. By combining its silicon lead with a more robust IP68 rating, Apple aims to attract "fold-curious" iOS users.
Industry analysts suggest the device is a strong contender for the high-end market. Engadget described the iPhone Duo as a "real crowd pleaser," while Android Central noted it is the "obvious choice" for existing iPhone users looking to transition to a foldable form factor.
Pricing and Market Positioning
Apple has positioned the Duo at a higher price point than its primary Samsung rival. Pricing for the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for the 256GB model and reaches $3,199 for the 2TB configuration. In comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is more accessible, starting at $1,899 for 256GB and topping out at $2,499 for 1TB.
What to Watch
As the market evolves, the industry will be watching how Apple's software ecosystem adapts to the foldable screen compared to Samsung's mature multitasking suite. Additionally, while the standard Z Fold 8 competes with the Duo's squat shape, Samsung has reserved a taller "candy bar" style for the more expensive Z Fold 8 Ultra, creating a tiered competition in the ultra-premium segment.
