Apple enters foldable market with premium iPhone Duo

The company's first foldable device merges iPhone and iPad capabilities with a dual-screen design and A20 Pro chip.

Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone Duo, marking the company's first venture into the foldable smartphone market. The device represents a significant departure from Apple's traditional slab design, aiming to converge the utility of the iPhone and iPad into a single, flexible form factor.

The iPhone Duo features a dual-screen configuration, consisting of a 5.4-inch external OLED display and a larger 7.6-inch internal flexible OLED panel. To support this new architecture, Apple utilized a titanium frame and ensured the device maintains an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. On the internal display, Apple has implemented an under-display FaceTime camera to provide an uninterrupted viewing experience.

Under the hood, the device is powered by the A20 Pro chip and features a dual-camera system with 48MP primary and ultrawide sensors. Apple also confirmed that the iPhone Duo supports the Apple Pencil, though this functionality will be delivered via a software update later this year. The device carries a premium starting price of $1,999.

A Strategic Shift in Hardware

This launch arrives nearly a decade after the iPhone X introduced the last major design shift for the product line. By entering the foldable segment, Apple is challenging the current market dominance of competitors like Samsung and Google. The move signals a broader strategic shift toward converged devices, where the boundary between a mobile phone and a productivity tablet is blurred.

Redefining the Pro Experience

For the industry, the iPhone Duo is more than just a new product; it is an attempt to redefine the "Pro" user experience. By combining the portability of a handset with the screen real estate of a tablet, Apple is targeting power users who require high-level multitasking capabilities on the go. The integration of under-display camera technology and flexible OLEDs further pushes the technical boundaries of the company's hardware engineering.

Availability and Launch

Apple has set a tight timeline for the device's rollout. Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo are scheduled to begin on October 16, with the official release date set for October 23. The device will be available in over 70 markets, including the United States. As Sam Rutherford of Engadget noted, the Duo may be the company's most interesting gadget in nearly a decade, venturing into territory that could reshape the future of the iPhone ecosystem.
