Apple Prototyped Foldable iPhone Stylus but May Skip Launch
Internal tests of a compact Apple Pencil for a foldable device faced durability and design hurdles.
Apple has internally prototyped and tested a modified, "stubbier" version of the Apple Pencil designed specifically for a future foldable iPhone. The effort represents Apple's attempt to integrate precision input into its first foray into the foldable smartphone market.
According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the company has considered launching this compact stylus, which was engineered to attach to the side of the device for both storage and charging. However, the accessory is now unlikely to be released alongside the first foldable iPhone. Internal findings suggest the stylus attachment point interferes with the physical action of opening the device, and there are significant concerns that the stylus could damage the delicate nature of the foldable screen.
The Foldable Race
Apple is exploring the foldable segment to compete with established rivals, most notably Samsung. The Galaxy Z Fold series has already set a market precedent by utilizing a specialized S Pen tailored for its larger, flexible display. By prototyping its own version of the Apple Pencil, Apple aimed to replicate this productivity advantage, bridging the gap between the iPhone's portability and the iPad's creative capabilities.
Design vs. Durability
The hesitation to ship the stylus highlights the persistent technical friction inherent in foldable hardware.
