Apple is reportedly testing a continuous heart rate sensor for the upcoming Apple Watch Series 12 to enable 24/7 health and recovery tracking. This shift would move the device away from its current intermittent sampling method to provide a constant stream of biometric data.
According to reports, the upgrade is designed to allow Apple to generate a "wellness" or "readiness" score. This metric would analyze high-frequency data to tell users how recovered they are and whether they should push their physical limits or prioritize rest. Additionally, the Series 12 is rumored to feature a new T8320 chip, which would mark a significant architectural shift after several generations of recycled silicon.
The Gap in Health Tracking
Currently, the Apple Watch conserves battery by measuring heart rate only every few minutes during normal wear. The device only switches to continuous tracking when a user manually starts a logged workout. While Apple introduced the Vitals app in watchOS 11 to help users monitor health trends, it still lacks the high-frequency data collection used by competitors such as Garmin, Fitbit, and Oura to calculate daily readiness.
Competing with Recovery Wearables
Moving to a continuous tracking model would allow Apple to compete directly with specialized recovery wearables. By capturing more accurate Heart Rate Variability (HRV) data throughout the day and night, Apple can fill a critical void in its ecosystem. A wellness score has long been a primary differentiator for rivals like Garmin and Fitbit, providing a holistic view of physical strain and recovery that the Apple Watch currently lacks.
The Battery Engineering Hurdle
Despite the potential health benefits, the transition poses a major engineering challenge regarding power consumption. Continuous sensor operation drains battery life significantly faster than intermittent sampling. This is a particular pain point for Apple, as the Apple Watch typically lasts around 18 hours on a single charge, whereas many of the specialized fitness trackers it aims to emulate can last several days.

If the continuous sensor and the T8320 chip are implemented, it would represent the most significant health-tracking overhaul for the Apple Watch in years.
